14-236 Pinellas Detectives Arrest Man On Iowa Warrant For Sexual Abuse

The victims are a 14-year-old female and 16-year-old female who were known to the suspect. Per Fl. Statute, 119.071(2)(h)1 no further information will be released that would tend to identify the victims.

What:
Detectives have arrested a man on an Iowa warrant for Sexual Abuse-Child. The victims were a 14-year-old female and 16-year-old female that were known to the suspect.

When:
The suspect was arrested on Thursday, September 11, 2014. The crime occurred from when the victim’s were 8 years of age to their present age of 14 and 16 years old.

Where:
The crime occurred at undisclosed location in Tama County, Iowa.

Why/How:
Pinellas County detectives began their investigation on Thursday, September 11, 2014 after they were contacted by the Tama County Sheriff’s Office in Iowa, requesting assistance with their investigation. Detectives advised a warrant had been issued for the suspect, 52-year-old Stewart David Smith for Sexual Abuse-Child.

Detectives stated Smith has admitted to the media in Iowa that he is a pedophile who has been to prison for crimes related to juveniles. Smith has a criminal history dating back to the 1990’s and was a registered sexual offender, but currently has no restrictions and is not required to register.

Pinellas County detectives met with Smith on Thursday, September 11, 2014 and arrested him on the Tama County warrant.  Smith was transported to the Pinellas County jail without further incident. There are currently no local charges.

Detectives advised that Smith has routinely taken part in juvenile related functions with church youth groups and girl scouts while living in Iowa. While living in Florida, he lived near a school and church daycare; therefore there could be local victims.
